About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

calculating 144 hr

So if I understand correctly, the 144 calculates starting from 0:00 the day after entry. So lets say if I enter 1st May, I must leave before 23:59pm of 7th May right? What if my flight leaves right after midnight of 8th, I'll probably go thru custom control before midnight, so technically I still exit China on 7th, or is it too risky since flight date is on 8th?

You have perfectly understood the calculation of 144 hours. Anyway, you have to know that as the time of your departure only the scheduled time is taken into account. So, if your flight departs at 00:05 on May 8, you are not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. This is very firm and it really does not matter if you will go through the passport/customs control during your exit on May 7. Simply, you will not be allowed to accomplish your journey at all or better to say, you will not be allowed to board your China bound flight.
