I am a UK citizen and I have a valid passport valid for more than 3 months. I will travel from
- Rome to Beijing direct flight
- Transit stay in Beijing for 4 days, less than 144-hours
- Beijing to Geneva direct flight

Your itinerary is perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, but you should be very careful regarding the remaining validity of your passport. I would not be so certain that more than 3 (and probably less than 6) months validity will be acceptable...
