US passport holder applying Chinese visa in HK

I am US passport holder, and currently live in US. The available appointments for Chinese visa application at Chinese consulate in NYC is more than 2 weeks away. I need to fly to China ASAP.
I just wonder if I can fly to Hong Kong and apply Chinse visa there to avoid the long waiting time in US.

It's kind of risky to do so. I advice you to consult China Visa Office Center in Hong Kong for details: +852 29921999,hongkongcenter@visaforchina.org. BTW, you also need to make an appoinment in HK to submit the requirements.
