My wife is a Chinese citizen and I wish to apply for a residence permit in Shenzhen.

Medical exam is not required. You need to submit the ID card of your wife and your marriage cartificat (translated into Chinese), application form, passport.

It is usually valid for less than 6 months or a year. Before expiration, you can extend it with the documents.
