About:Visa on Arrival

VoA is back! Pay attention to the following

Update for everyone wanting VoA for Shenzhen: it resumed on the 8th of January. However, only Shenzhen Airport and Shekou Port (Hong Kong Macau Ferry Port ferry with CKS) offer VoA at the time of writing. Be careful though because you need to take the 9:00 ferry to be eligible. The Shekou Port office is open until 17:30 and, at the time of writing, the second and last ferry departs from Hong Kong at 18:00. Another important note... VoA is only available on week days. They are closed on weekends (which I found out the hard way today. Luckily, the ferry staff retrieved me before departure. Else I'd be stuck somewhere in Shenzhen). I'll give you an update on the process tomorrow (in terms of processing time and whatnot). I do recomme d purchasing your ticket online because the lines at the ticket office are long as hell (lunar new year and the reopening of the border are the culprits)

By the way, standard entry requirements still apply (PCR test 48 hours before arrival). In Hong Kong, community testing PCR tests cost 135 HKD for your result within 24 hours and 235 HKD to get your result at 19:00 or 20:30 the same day. You do need a Chinese (+86), Hong Kong (+852), or Macau (+853) to use the online booking system. Walk ins are rarely accepted. SIM cards, especially CSL, China Mobile & SoSIM (3 HK) are widely available. Avoid 3 HK and SoSIM if you want your SIM cards to be registered and activated within minutes because it can take up to 7 days to be processed if you use a passport (took me 2 days but that can still be too long if you have a short transit in Hong Kong). Have fun!

I just attempted the crossing through Shekou. The VOA facility is open, however they will only accept applicants who are visiting Shenzhen for an emergency or compassionate reasons e.g. the death of a relative. I was entering as a tourist so I was turned away while they fiddled with my passport for a few hours before handing it back. I had to wait for 6 hours for the ferry back to Sheung Wan. Staff assist you with the return ticket even if you don't have any RMB on you.
