About:Chinese Names

What does Xiao means if added to your name.

I'm currently watching c-drama now and i noticed that they are kinda happy if someone used XIAO plus their name instead of just their name, uttered by another person. I was wondering if someone could give me an explanation of this. Thanks in advance.

It's like adding -y to English names, eg. Jonathan -> Johny.
