Is Teaching With Permanent Residency Without Work Permits Possible?

Hello! I'm a UK citizen and am an ESL teacher. My Chinese wife and I married in 2010, and I have been living in Beijing since October 2011.
I would like to apply for permanent residency in China, and would like to inquire whether it will be possible to keep working as a teacher as a permanent resident. As my job title may not be senior enough, will I have to continue applying for work visas, even if I obtain permanent residency?
Thank you for your concern.
