Work permit extension

Hello! I’m currently outside China and my employer was able to extend my work permit last June. It was only for 6 months because my passport was expiring.
Is it possible for my employer to extend it again if I won’t be able to come back before the WP expires? Do I need to have a valid residence permit to apply for extension?
Thank you!

Your employer can possibly extend it again. Residence permit is not required to apply for WP extension.
