About:China Family Reunion Visa

I live in China part of the year and need a new visa

My wife is a Chinese citizen and PRC passport holder. I have had a tourist visa in the past that was multiple entry for four months stay and valid for 10 years. Due to complications I had to discard that visa in order to extend my stay this passed Spring due to flight restrictions. I need a new visa and was looking at Q2. Normally, I stay in China about 5 months or so a year. A six month visa would be ideal. is it possible for me to get a Q2 with 6 months validity, multiple entry and 10 year?

You can try to apply for a multiple-entry Q2 visa with 6 months stay length each time, but it's difficult to aks for a validity of 10 years.

is the Q2 or Q1 a single entry visa or multiple entry? How long are they normally valid for?

Q1 is a single entry one, Q2 can be a single, double, and multiple entry visa.

I was told right now they are not issuing new Q2's, but if you already have one, they wont issue beyond the "stay" extension of 30-180 days. If you are in the USA or leave China, you wont be allowed back in. Apparently, this will change and they will again issue/honor valid 10 yr visas when the virus is under control and travel restrictions eased.
