I intend to travel and tour China for a minimum duration of 5 months. What visa will allow me to stay in China for the entire duration?

Dave, only the tourist visa is suitable for your travel purpose, but it won't allow a duration of 5 months. Many you can apply for a one-year tourist visa with multiple entries.
