About:China Family Reunion Visa

Q2 Family Visa

I'm British, and my Wife was a Chinese national before changing her Passport to becoming British a few years ago after Marriage. We have 2 children and came to China as a family in May 2018 on a (Q2 Visa) to visit her Chinese relatives.

With our Visas about to expire, and with the closure of the China Borders due to COVID-19 Virus... Will we be able to renew our Visas here directly in China for a further 2 years? Or do we still need to leave the country and apply overseas like we did in the UK before coming here? Thank you.

Do you have a residence permit or a Q2 visa? These two are very different things and Q2 visa holders must leave the country before the duration of stay expires. As the longest duration of stay on a Q2 visa is 180 days, it is not possible for you to stay in Mainland China legally for nearly two years without traveling to a third country or region in between.

If that's the case for you then I am sorry to say that you have overstayed your welcome by quite a bit and it is no longer possible to get any visas without leaving Mainland China first. What's worse is that a visa overstayer will not be able to leave without settling their debts with the local National Immigration Administration office.

No, our Visa is a Q2, and we always do the border run around every 180 days or just before since we have been here over the past couple of years.

However with the Visas due to expire in May, can we renew them here in China? We wanted to do it in Hong Kong, but both HK & mainland China Borders are currently closed. Thanks.
