What happens after staying in China after 5 years with temporary Residence?

Me and my husband have been working in China for 3 years, and have been doing the yearly renewal of temporary residency.
We have been reading alot about the temporary residency is only valid up to 5 years and we enjoy living in China and would like to potentially stay for longer. It would be great if someone could advice us what this actually means and what we might have to do.

Well, actually you can apply for work visa and work for years in China. There is no the 5-year limit.
