What Visa should I get (UK citizen)

I want to stay in Shanghai for 35-40 days this is my first visit, in which I have a chinese friend living there so i will be spending time with her, like are ordinary citizens also allowed to write an invitation letter for me and alos does anyone know the best visa to apply for I have a British Passport.
