1o hour layover in Nanjing/China

Coming from Tokyo we have a 10 hour layover in Nanjing/China going to Shanghai and then to Chicago/USA. Is it possible to spend the 10 hour layover in a hotel or should we rather spend the night in the airport. We are flying China Eastern Airlines in Business.

Lisa, am I right that your itinerary is:

Japan - Nanjing - Shanghai - Chicago

If so, you will probably arrive by plane in Nanjing in the evening ad proceed by the plane to Shanghai in the morning and then from Shanghai to Chicago.

If I'm right, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you will be able to stay at the hotel in Nanjing between two flights.

You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you are advised to book an accommodation in Nanjing in advance and to print out your accommodation confirmation. Also, you will declare at check-in in Japan that you will travel to Chicago via China using 24 hour visa free transit. Also, you will inform yourselves about the luggage policy because it is possible that you will have to collect your luggage at some point and then perform a recheck. This is a possibility, but it is also possible that your luggage will be tagged all the way to Chicago. Just remember to inform yourselves about this, very important detail. After a short check of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon your arrival in Nanjing, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit and you will apply for a temporary entry permit because your following flight to Shanghai is a domestic one. Also, you will clear an immigration and after that you will be allowed to exit the airport and have several hours of decent sleep in your accommodation.

You will continue your travel in the morning and after you arrive in Shanghai, you will clear the exit immigration and proceed to your boarding gate for your flight to Chicago. Again, inform yourselves about the luggage policy at check-in in Japan to travel with all the information you need.
