About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

24 hour visa for Austrian with NZ residency travelling from NZ to Europe

Hi, I was wondering if someone could please assist me with my query regarding a 24 hour visa free entry to China. I am planning a trip back home to Austria with China Southern Airlines with stopovers in Guangzhou and Urumqi and was told by my travel agent that I would need a visa due to having 2 stopovers in China each way. According to the info I can find online I should be able to get a 24 visa free entry, as my total stay in China will be less than 24 hours both ways. I did read that Urumqi only offers vis free entry for 2hours, but both times I would only be there for 1.5 hours.
Any assistance and confirmation about the rules in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Andy, your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. By the way, I assume that you will travel on a single (through) ticket by China Southern and that your flight from Guangzhou to Vienna via Urumqi will be by CZ6021.

So, you will print out your flight tickets and bring those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in New Zealand that you will travel to Vienna via China using 24 hour visa free transit. It is clearly written in Tiamtic that you are allowed to have multiple stops under 24 hour TWOV, so just be relaxed because you will do it perfectly visa free. After a short check of your flight tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon your arrival in Guangzhou, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit where you will apply for a temporary entry permit because the segment between Guangzhou and Urumqi is considered to be a domestic one. Nothing to worry about. You need to worry about your short layover, but having in mind that you are traveling on a single ticket will bring you a relief and you can also rely on China Southern staff to assist you to accomplish your transfer in Guangzhou successfully.

After Guangzhou, everything is very easy because during the stop in Urumqi you will just clear exit immigration and will proceed by the same plane and on the same flight to Vienna.
