About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Am I eligible to utilize the 144 hour visa free transit when taking a cruise embarking in Shanghai?

I am planning a seven night cruise with my husband and adult children that embarks in Shanghai and sails to the following Japanese ports ( Koyto, Kobe, and Tokyo) before disembarking in Shanghai. We are flying from the United States and would like to arrive in Shanghai three days before the cruise to sightsee in Shanghai. When the ship disembarks in Shanghai, we plan to fly back to the United States the same day of disembarkation. Does this itinerary qualify for the 144 hour visa free transit? If allowable, how do I acquire this 144 hour visa free transit and what documentation is required? Where and to whom is this documentation shown?

Yes that is fine as long as your flights to China do not also transfer through any Japanese airports nor another Chinese city outside of Shanghai area.
Bring print out of cruise confirmation/itinerary and airline confirmation w/ 16 digit ticket number.

Tell airline when you check in that you will be doing visa free transit. When you arrive in Shanghai visit the 144 hour visa free transit desk with the paperwork listed above and fill out the blue form in order to get the entry permit.

Show the same info at the cruise terminal upon return to Shanghai
