About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

princess cruise to Japan

We are on a 8 day Cruise to Japan that starts and ends win Shanghai. Do we have to get a China visa even if we are not staying more than72 hours in Shanghai before the cruise and at the end of the cruise ? (end we leave that day)
Please let me know.

There are no first flights so we do stop in Japan first for 2 hours. So due to that flight we have to purchase a visa, correct?

You need to get a visa in advance or book airline that doesn't travel through Japanese airports

Actually, it appears that you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai during your first stop and for 24 hour visa free transit during your second stop. It is 24 hours visa free transit because you intend to transfer to the plane during the same day of your cruise arrival, so you will have less than 24 hour of transit tome.

Anyway, to be certain about your eligibility here are several conditions that your itinerary has to fulfill:

- Your flight to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your flight out of Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan.

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you will be definitely eligible for 144 and 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You will print out your flight tickets, your cruise tickets and accommodation booking confirmation for your accommodation in Shanghai.
