Actually, during your first stop, you will use 144 hour visa free transit and during your second stop, 24 hour visa free transit.
72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.
Anyway, to be completely certain whether you are eligible for these visa free transit options, here are several conditions your itinerary has to fulfill:
- Your flight from Toronto to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China.
- Your flight from Shanghai to Canada is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan.
If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you will be, as I have already written, eligible for 144 hour TWOV during your first stop in Shanghai and for 24 hour TWOV during your second stop in Shanghai.
You should print out your flight and cruise tickets and a confirmation of your accommodation booking in Shanghai and take those printouts with you.
