Thank you very much, Zupan. My itinerary would be Lisbon to Shenzhen to Tokyo. I'll be in a direct flight from Lisbon to Shenzhen, stay there for 3/4 days and depart from Shenzhen to Tokyo. If I understood correct, that's indeed possible?

Thank you for the help.

Miguel, the most important question here is how do you plan to arrive in Shenzhen? If you will arrive from Hong Kong or Macau, you as Portuguese citizen are definitely eligible for 5 day Shenzhen VOA at the price of 168 CNY. Also, you are definitely allowed to travel from Shenzhen to Tokyo, but please have in mind that your flight is not allowed to have any additional landing in China!

If you are arriving in Shenzhen by plane, you cannot obtain a Shenzhen VOA and in reality, nobody can obtain a VOA in this way because there is no Shenzhen VOA office at the airport! Anyway, if you arrive in Shenzhen by a direct flight from a certain country, but on a direct flight to Shenzhen, without any additional landing in China, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. As you can see, in this case you will have an itinerary:

X country (different than mainland China and Japan) - Shenzhen - Tokyo

If the above itinerary is what you intend to do, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

No, just take a look at your itinerary and you will soon realize what will be your real itinerary and as you can see, you have several very good options for your planned travel.

Miguel, I think you have understood me perfectly :)

To conclude... If your itinerary is:

Lisbon - Shenzhen - Tokyo

And you don't have any other additional stop within mainland China, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit that allows you to stay absolutely visa free within the entire Guangdong province and not only in Shenzhen. This option is also absolutely free of charge and you can enjoy it as often as you can.

By the way, both of us know that there is no direct flight between Lisbon and Shenzhen, so I assume that you will travel, in reality something like:

Lisbon - Frankfurt - Shenzhen - Tokyo

Or something similar. This is all just fine, but remember, you cannot have any additional stop in mainland China beside Shenzhen. In reality, you can also use Guangzhou because it is located within the same transit zone, so you can arrive in Shenzhen and depart from Guangzhou or vice versa. Anyway, you are not allowed to travel:

Lisbon - Beijing - Shenzhen - Tokyo
