If your itinerary will look like:
Vietnam - China - Vietnam
You will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance because this itinerary is round trip and not a transit that would allow you to travel using 144 hour visa free transit.
Anyway, if you introduce a third country or eligible territory, you will be able to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit. Fore example if your itinerary is:
Vietnam - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Vietnam
This would be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you would not need any kind of visa.
If you will have the first itinerary, your best or practically the only option is to apply and obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa through one of three CVASC (Chinese Visa Application Service Center) located in Vietnam. You can find them in Hanoi, Da Nang and HCMC. Of course, you will apply through their website, but you can also arrange a personal visit. You are advised to start this application as soon as you arrive in Vietnam. I hope that they will accept your application although you are not a resident of Vietnam, but Australian.
