The Cruise departs Shanghai 15th February at 17.00.We have 1 day at sea arriving in Okinawa Japan at 7.pm on Monday 17th February. Are we eligible for a 144 day Visa. There is a lot of confusion here and we are getting conflicting information from both the travel agent and cruise line as to what we need. I hope you can advise us.

Actually, your situation is very simple. Your itinerary, as far as the Chinese authorities are concerned is:

Singapore - Shanghai - Okinawa (Japan)

After Okinawa you proceed to Hong Kong and through several other Asian destinations, all the way to Genoa in Italy.

To conclude, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and all you have to do is to print out your cruise tickets and have that printout with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Singapore that you will travel to Japan via Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit.

Upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out a blue form. You will also present your cruise ticket and shortly after, you will get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the airport.
