If Shanghai is your only stop within mainland China, you are eligible for a visa free transit in China. To be precise, your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.
You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also you will declare at check-in in India that you will travel to US via Shanghai using 24 hours visa free transit. After a short inspection, you will be allowed to board the plane. Regardless of the fact that you are probably flying on a single (through) ticket, don't forget whether you will have to collect your luggage in Shanghai and perform a recheck or not. The luggage will be probably tagged all the way to your final destination, but you should ask, just for a case.
Upon your landing in Shanghai, you can remain within the transit zone of the airport if you are flying on a single (through) ticket, but if you are traveling on separate tickets, you will have to approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. This permit will be granted to you because you will have to collect your luggage and make a new check-in for the continuation of your journey toward US. This permit is free of charge. Also, you can apply for this permit if you intend to shortly explore Shanghai, anyway you should be aware that the issuing of this permit depends entirely on a discretion of immigration authorities on a day of arrival.
By the way, you should be more specific with your question because both of us know that there are no direct flights between Chennai and Shanghai and Shanghai and Oklahoma City!
