About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Melbourne to Hong Kong to Guangzhou to Hong Kong to Japan

I'm an Australian Travelling from Melbourne to Hong Kong then entering into Guangzhou for 2 days then back to Hong Kong airport to fly to Japan. Do I need a visa for China?

Yes you need a visa as HK - GZ - HK is not a transit.
