About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

HONG KONG to SHANTOU by Train

Hello,

We will be traveling to Hong Kong in January. We want to take 3 days in China (Shantou) by Train.
This would be by Train, from Hong Kong - Shenzhen - Shantou, and then back to Hong Kong in 3 days. Would it be possible to get the 144hr free visa and where to get it from (since we will be entering China by Train via Shenzhen)?

You didn't mention your citizenship and that is essential in determining your potential eligibility for 144 hour visa free transit.

The most important detail is that when you travel from Hong Kong or Macau to Guangdong province and you want to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, you have to fly. You cannot use a train, a bus or a ferry and become eligible for this visa free transit option. You can either fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou or from Macau to Jieyang Chaoshan (sometimes called Shantou airport). So, if you fly from Hong Kong, you can return, but to Macau and if you fly from Macau, you have to return to Hong Kong. Your itinerary has to be:

Hong Kong - Guangdong province - Macau

or

Macau - Guangdong province - Hong Kong

You can return to Macau by ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port and from the same place to Hong Kong in relation which one was your departure point. Also, you should have in mind that you will have to have your ferry ticket obtained online through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger transport company (for Hong Kong) or TurboJet ferry (for Macau). Of course, you are perfectly allowed to return by plane from Jieyang Chaoshan to Macau or from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, again taking care of the above mentioned itineraries.

It is also possible to return to Hong Kong by direct train departing from Guangzhou East railways station to Hung Hom Hong Kong railway station. Anyway, the tickets for this train should not be booked through official MTR website because they are not offering e-confirmations with a name on it. The best are reputable agencies like Travel China Guide, exactly this one.
