About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shenzhen transit visa

Hi,

I’m an Irish passport holder living in Hong Kong, I will be flying out from Shenzhen airport to United States, will I be eligible for free 24 hours transit visa going from HK to Shenzhen and return? Planning to enter Shenzhen via Luohu border and return via high speed train to West Kowloon station. Thanks.

Joe, you cannot use any kind of visa free transit schemes when traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. Anyway, you can rely on a 5 day Shenzhen VOA at the price of 168 CNY for Irish citizens. Also, you can obtain it at three border crossings:

- Lo Wu / Luohu (until Lo Wu by train, from Luohu by metro)
- Huanggang (by bus, but be careful that bus really goes via Huanggang border crossing)
- Shekou (by ferry, but keep in mind the opening hours of Shenzhen VOA: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 17:00)

To return back to Hong Kong from Shenzhen, you can rely on visa free transit, but not 24 hours because this option is not allowed, but on 144 hour visa free transit. To be eligible for this option, you cannot take a train from Shenzhen or a bus. Your only option is a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou ferry terminal to Hong Kong Macau ferry terminal.

You will have to book a ferry ticket before your travel from US to Shenzhen. Keep in mind that you will have to book this ticket online because you will need your name on an e-confirmation that will be sent to you after a booking of your ticket. Please, have in mind that your ferry is not allowed to depart from Shenzhen at least 25 hours after your scheduled arrival by plane from US. You should print out the mentioned ferry ticket and have it with you in hard copy.
