About:Shanghai 15-day Visa-free Policy for Cruise Tour Groups

We are travelling to Shanghai and Hong Kong in November 2020 on a cruise.

While we may join a small tour, we also like to explore on our own. Do we need a visa?

We are from Montreal, Canada travelling November 8th, 2020 on Celebrity Millennium from Tokyo. We’ll be arriving in Shanghai in November 15th from Nagasaki Japan and then later arriving in Hong Kong from Taipei Taiwan on November 21st.

Marbib, could you, please, just inform us about your citizenship, about your place of departure and with the name of your cruise company. Also a date of your departure from your place of departure would be quite helpful for us to supply you with correct and reliable answer. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you will need a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance. The reason is simple. Your cruise will arrive in Shanghai from Nagasaki (Japan) and after Shanghai will travel to Okinawa (Japan). As you can see, this is not a transit because you are departing from Japan to China and return back to Japan immediately after you have visited Shanghai.

It's good that you know this detail in advance and this will allow you to obtain a visa on time and not in a hurry. Also, very good detail is that Canadian citizens are eligible for long term, multiple entry Chinese tourist (L) visas, up to 10 years. Anyway, to be granted a long term visa, you have to ask for one and your argument for this will be that you intend to travel to China more often during the next years. Since you are from Montréal, you will apply and obtain your visa exactly at CVASC located in Montréal.
