You are perfectly allowed to stay in Shenzhen itself for up to 144 hours. There is no problem about that. When you obtain a 144 hour visa free transit at any of the airports in Guangdong province (Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Jieyang Chaoshan airports), you are allowed to stay and travel throughout the entire Guangdong province. Shenzhen is also located within that province.

Yes, it is. Anyway, to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit (not 144 hour visa) you need to depart from Shenzhen or some other city within Guangdong province to a third country or territory. For example, you are allowed to travel to both Hong Kong and Macau. Anyway, you should take care that your stay within Guangdong province has to be longer than 24 hours to be eligible for this option!

If you intend to travel to Hong Kong and Macau, you can use a ferry departing from Shenzhen Shekou port and keep in mind that you will have to book a ferry ticket before your arrival in Shenzhen. To book a ticket for Hong Kong, you will use CKS - Chu Kong Passenger transport website and for Macau TurboJet ferry website. When you book your ferry ticket, you will receive an e-confirmation that you will have to print out and to bring that printout with you. It will serve you as a proof of your transit and also to collect your real paper ticket at Shenzhen Shekou terminal.

You have to take exactly that ferry you have bough your ticket for.
