About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US -> Beijing -> Shanghai -> US

I have a US passport and am planning to fly into Beijing and take a bullet train to Shanghai for a few days, then back to Beijing for my flight home to US. Will this count as A to C for 144 hours visa?

Since when is Shanghai a country?

You need a tourist visa for this trip.

"144 hours visa" doesn't exist. There is 144 hours transit without visa, but you are not in transit to a third country. And furthermore, two stops in China would limit you to 24 hours transit anyway, even if you were on your way to a third country. You must get a visa.
