About:Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access

Hong Kong- Hainan

Hello,
I am a French student who lives in Taipei for one year (I have an ARC which ends in July ).
I wanted to know if it was possible to go to Hainan from Hong Kong and apply for the free visa.
I have planned to do :
Taipei-Hong Kong-Shenzhen (apply for the 5-visa)-Hong Kong- Hainan-Taipei
Thank you for your help.

(It's me Ophelie from France)
Thank you so much for you rapid answer.

I need to start to go by Shenzhen first. So I will apply for the 30-day-free visa.
I have received only one answer from an agency and I communicate by wechat. Is it normal to communicate by we chat ?

If I have understood well I have to book the flight first and then apply for the visa?
I find it scary to book the flight before being sure I will enter Hainan for sure.

Thank you in advance for your answers,

My friends who lives in Shenzhen sent me all the documents to take the ferry from HongKong airport and then get the visa at Shekou port.

Thank you for the advise "not to accept the services I don't need" because another agency just proposed me to reserve all the hotels for me.

I took my flights so now I just need to send all the documents to the agency and to pay them. Then I normally received the 30-day-visa, is that right?

Thank you for your quick response, you really helped me a lot.

Yes, you are perfectly allowed to do that. You can rely on 30 day visa free access or on Hainan VOA. Since you will depart from Hong Kong to Hainan, probably the best option would be to declare at check-in that you will rely on a Hainan VOA upon arrival. The price for French citizens is 168 CNY. Also, to be 100% certain that you will be allowed to board the plane for Hainan maybe you could opt for 30 day visa free access. This option requires that book some service from local Hainan agency that will send you a kind of invitation letter during your correspondence with them.

One more detail. If you decide to travel on Hainan VOA, you can change your itinerary a bit because when you apply for a Hainan VOA, you are allowed to travel to a third country or third eligible territory (Taiwan) via a mainland Chinese city. In other words, you can change your itinerary to look:

Taiwan - Hong Kong - Hainan - Shenzhen - Taiwan

This option is simpler that your original one and probably cheaper on flights and you don't need to obtain a Shenzhen VOA because you will be covered by Hainan VOA.

OK, think about it and bring a decision.

Ophelie, since you have to go to Shenzhen first, then you will use your first mentioned itinerary. I advise you to use Lo Wu / Luohu border crossing for reaching Shenzhen. When traveling back from Shenzhen to Hong Kong, you can use literally every mean of transport to reach Hong Kong. The price for a Shenzhen VOA is 168 CNY.

I understand that you are probably a bit scared because of wechat communication, but you should not worry. This is fine, although it appears a bit informal. Also, you should take care not to accept the services you really don't need. Usually, people tend to limit the offer of the agencies to an airport transfer and if they strongly insist that a visitor takes some more than that, again on airport transfer for their flight out of Hainan. It is important that those services are useful for you and that they do not cross the reasonable and expected limits.

You are perfectly fine to book your flights and you will be definitely granted an invitation letter. It is not a visa, but some kind of a document that you will print out and use for your travel to Hainan.

You can use a ferry to travel directly from HKIA Skypier to Shenzhen Shekou port where you will obtain a Shenzhen VOA. Anyway, please, have in mind the following opening time of Shekou visa office: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 17:00. So, if you can coordinate your flight with a ferry to reach Shekou during the working hours, fine. Anyway, if you cannot, you will use a combination of a bus + train to reach Lo Wu / Luohu border crossing.

It's good that you have bought your flights and if you have agreed upon the service(s) you will use, you will send a money to the agency and they will send you an invitation letter. This is the most important document that you will print out and bring that printout with you. This will allow you to enter Hainan without any problem.

Just inform me when you receive this invitation letter.
