Traveling with major cruise line in Asia, do I need a visa?

Doing a 15 day cruise. Begins in Hong Kong, Shaghai (1 day), Tianjin (Beijing)(1 day), Nagasaki, Kyoto, Tokyo. Would arrive 48 hrs prior in Hong Kong. In Tianjin, would we be able to tour out of the port area into Beijing (1 day)? Would the 144 hour visa free transit apply?

Zayas, of course you cannot use 144 hour visa free transit, but you are advised to use exactly this: 15 day visa free policy for cruise tour groups.

Your cruise fulfills the requirements and you are supposed to contact a tourist agency, for example this one - Travel China Guide, and you will book some tour with them. It is enough to book just one tour and you will be covered by this policy in Shanghai and in Beijing. It is important that you find at least just one person, although more would be better (cheaper) and to agree with the agency about your tour upon your arrival in Shanghai.

You can read additional details on the site dedicated to this option with the title: Shanghai 15-day Visa-free Policy for Cruise Tour Groups and you will decide whether you will choose this policy or to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance. My suggestion is that you rely on this policy. It is hassle free.
