Actually, you can obtain a Shenzhen visa on arrival (the price for UK citizens is 304 CNY) and with this visa you are allowed to explore the city. All other options are formally not available although recent practice indicates that Chinese immigration authorities are granting a temporary entry permits based on 24 hour visa free transit to the passengers of cruise ships arriving from countries/territories different than Hong Kong and Macau. Those temporary entry permits are free of charge.
Anyway, I really cannot confirm that you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, although this is highly likely to happen. In any case, you have a back-up in a Shenzhen VOA that can be obtained upon arrival.
