Huanggang VOA

Hey ZUPAN, do you have any details on the Huanggang VOA process?

I've done the Lowu VOA process before with no problems but given the recent situation in HK, thinking it would be easier to just take a cab to Huanggang and go through that.

Australian passport and will be flying out from Shenzhen airport the next night.

Thanks Zupan. I read that once you exit HK immigration you can't just walk across the border like you can at Lowu but you need to take a shuttle bus to take you to Chinese immigration? Is the VOA office before or after I take this shuttle from the HK customs side?

Actually, the process at Huanggang border crossing is the same as it is at Lo Wu / Luohu. There are no differences. Huanggang is a bit busier and I would say that they handle at least 2/3 of all issued VOAs, although the waiting time is practically the same as at Lo Wu / Luohu.

You can use a cab to reach the crossing, but you are warned that your Hong Kong cab will not be able to cross the border itself, but you will have to catch another one from the other side of the border crossing. Also, you are advised not to use this crossing during morning or evening rush hours. Cab drivers in Hong Kong usually know the colleagues in Shenzhen, so you can try to arrange everything with your Hong Kong driver in advance.

One more detail... People sometimes mix up Huanggang with Lok Ma Chau / Futian border crossing because they are very close to each other. The problem in this case is the fact that Lok Ma Chau simply doesn't have VOA issuing office.

Also, you are perfectly allowed to fly out from Shenzhen, but your flight is not allowed to have any additional landing of any kind within mainland China!

Exactly. Between the two check points you will take a shuttle bus that operates frequently. The price should be around 10 HKD.

On Hong Kong side, you will just clear Hong Kong formalities and when asked about your visa, you will just declare that you will travel to Shenzhen only and that you will obtain a Shenzhen VOA. They will allow you to take a shuttle bus to the mainland Chinese side where you will easily find an office for VOA issuing.

After your VOA is granted, you will proceed to the taxi to take you to your destination. You are advised to have written your destination within Shenzhen in Chinese characters and you should also ask a driver to use a meter. Have in mind to bring some Chinese cash from Hong Kong money changer to pay for your visa and also to pay a taxi fare.
