Double Connection in China Okay without Visa?

I'm looking to get back to the U.S. from BKK, and the best award ticket option is with Hainan airlines, so my itinerary would look like this:

BKK->PVG (2.5 hour connection) PVG->CKG (21 hour connection, would like to explore city if possible) CKG->LAX.

Is this acceptable for TWOV or not? I'm very confused

As you will have both layovers in Shanghai and Chongqing, you need to calculate the hours from your scheduled arrival to schedule departure. If the layover is more than 24 hours, you will need a visa.
