About:Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access

Visa needed for Hainan from UK?

My husband and I are travelling to Hainan from London with a layover in mainland China. We both have UK passports. Please can you explain what the visa requirements are, as the information online is conflicting and not very clear.
Thank you!

If you intend to reach Hainan island directly from any mainland Chinese airport, for example:

London - Shanghai - Haikou or Sanya

You will need a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance.

When arriving directly from within mainland China, as explained above, you immediately lose your eligibility for both, Hainan 30 day visa free access and Hainan VOA.

Anyway, if your itinerary is:

London - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Haikou or Sanya

You are definitely eligible for both options.

The same thing is valid if you arrive to Hainan by taking a direct flight from UK to Hainan without any additional stop.

Please, keep in mind that the eligibility for Haian VOA is always a bit tricky because probably the only airport staff that will allow you to board the plane when traveling on Hainan VOA is in Hong Kong and maybe in Macau. Everywhere else, the airport staff will be more than reluctant to allow the passengers who have declared that they will obtain a Hainan VOA to board the plane. Quite the contrary, if traveling on 30 day visa free access will make every airport staff to allow you to board the plane because with this option you receive a kind of invitation letter from the agency that will be honored by airport staff.

I hope that I have explained the situation with these Hainan travel options, but if you still have some additional questions, here we are.
