About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit in Beijing to Taipei for Malaysian.

Do I need to apply Visa if just transit in either Beijing or Shanghai to Taiwan? The connecting time is up to 18hours so I need to step out the airport to a hotel to have some rest.

Unfortunately, Malaysian citizens are not eligible for any of visa free transit schemes at the time being. You are advised to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.

That's mean I can only stay inside airport for the transit at all time if I have no Visa?

Unfortunately even this is not true. Malaysian citizens simply cannot use visa free transit schemes at all for undisclosed reasons at the time being. Even if you just want to remain within the transit zone, you need a visa. Sorry, but appears that some big reason is behind this decision by Chinese authorities, although I really do not know a single one.
