About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Japan - Qingdao - Delhi. (1.5 hr stop in Kunming)

I'm an Indian passport holder. I'm having a flight (Shandong airlines)

Osaka (KIX, 12:55) - Qingdao (TAO, 14:45) - Flight number SC8092
15 hr layover in Qingdao
Qingdao (TAO, 06:00) - New Delhi (DEL, 14:00) - Flight number SC8829
My second flight SC8829 is also making a 1.5hr stop at Kunming before again starting to New Delhi.

I confirmed with the airline, they said I have to collect luggage in Qingdao and check-in again. Can I do this with 24 hr TWOV. I have some questions
1. Is the 24hr TWOV and temporary entry pass same ?
2. To take temporary entry pass, should I also have Hotel reservation and registration with local police ? (It says in some sites to register with local police). I plan to do some sight seeing, but I will return to airport by night, so wont be needing any hotel.
3. What is the procedure to follow in Kunming stop ?

Anyone, please help. Thanks a lot!

Part one:

Hari, the first and by far the most important detail is that your flight itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. Now, let's see your questions:

Also, you are perfectly allowed to collect your luggage and perform a recheck for your second flight. I will explain...

1. No, these are two different things, although they usually go one with each other. 24 hour TWOV is your right to travel through China visa free if your itinerary is less than 24 hour long. Anyway, sometimes passengers travel on a single ticket where the airlines handle their luggage and if they have a short layover, they don't apply for a temporary entry permit (entry pass, as you have mentioned).

2. Having a hotel booking and the printout as a proof is generally preferred. Anyway, you will receive a temporary entry permit because you will have to collect your luggage and perform a recheck for your second flight. Also, you don't need to register at the police because the registration is required only in case of stay longer than 24 hours. So, you will be just fine in either case.

3. In reality, Kunming stop is quite easy for you because your luggage will be tagged all the way from Qingdao to Delhi, so in Kunming you will just clear the immigration and basically this is it.

Part two:

Now, some additional explanations:

You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Osaka that you will travel to Delhi via China using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon arrival in Qingdao, you will approach 24 hour visa free counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. You will present your tickets and you will be soon granted a permit. You will collect your luggage and clear the immigration and customs. After that, you are in China and you will decide what will you do. I would suggest you to kill your time by some sightseeing and Qingdao is quite an iteresting town. Use shuttle buses departing quite often to the center of Qingdao, but be very careful not to miss the last one because otherwise the taxis are noticeably more expensive.

After your sightseeing, you will return to the airport for a rather boring overnight and in the morning, you will just board your plane bound for Kunming/Delhi. There will be only a security check because this portion of your flight is considered to be a domestic although it goest under the same flight number and by the same aircraft all the way to Delhi.

As I have already mentioned, you will have to exit from the plane in Kunmimg and here you will clear the immigration. After that, you will rezurn to the plane and continue your journey to Delhi.

That's it :)

I hope Zupan don't mind me chiming in. There are generally places to store bags but it must be free of electronic devices with batteries (look for the sign that says "bag storage"). SIM cards are generally not sold at smaller airports (many local kiosks will not accept passports) so you will have to rely on the free WiFi or get a prepaid WiFi hotspot from Japan. There will be no access to almost all Western websites or the entire suite of Google services while on a Chinese SIM or free WiFi, unless you have a VPN (which is technically illegal to use and may come with administrative penalties).
