About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Connection in Departing Flight - is this allowed?

I am currently in Hong Kong and I was planning to book a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai for Monday, 25 Nov. I then was planning to stay in Shanghai until my flight on Thursday, 28 Nov. I already booked my flight from Shanghai to Chicago, but I'm wondering if it's okay that my flight has a 3 hour layover in Beijing? I do not plan to leave the airport or the secured area in Beijing. I booked from Shanghai to Chicago so both parts of the flight are on the same ticket (have the same ticket # too) and are with the same airline. Is this okay? Like I said, I am NOT trying to leave the airport at all in Beijing. I only plan to leave the airport in Shanghai.

Sorry to clarify, I am wondering if I am eligible for the 144 hour visa-free transit policy.
Hong Kong -> Shanghai
Shanghai -> USA (but there is a connection in Beijing)

You are not eligible for 144 hours visa-free transit, and you must either get a visa or change your flights. Stopping in two consecutive transit zones in mainland China automatically limits you to 24 hours visa-free transit. There is no "I'm not leaving the airport" exemption.

Your best option is to use one of several, really great, agencies in Hong Kong that can for certain obtain rush Chinese tourist (L) visa, so that you can depart on Thursday. Anyway, you have to apply literally tomorrow in the morning hours.

I apologize, now I can see that you depart from Hong Kong tomorrow. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about visa. You should try to make some other arrangement with your airline because you will definitely not be allowed to board the plane with your actual tickets.
