About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Standby

I will be flying from the us thru Shanghai with my final to be Bali. When I fly into Shanghai I will have a day layover and air carrier change. I will be flying standby through the airline I work and switching to a partner airline. The partner airline requires that we “book” the ticket and pay but we are still not confirmed. Will immigration allow this and will we be able to continue into Bali the next day?

Standby is strictly not allowed under any circumstances.

So if we fly into pvg as long as we have a confirmed ticket out of Shanghai we are eligible for the 6 visa (144 hr)?

No. Simply having a confirmed ticket is not enough. You must actually fly on that confirmed ticket to leave China. Any attempt to deceive Chinese police by leaving on a different ticket may result in dire consequences for you.

Such requirements are unique to transit visitors to Mainland China, and as you do not need a visa for any of these places if you are a US citizen, you do not need to depart on the same ticket if not visiting Mainland China.
