About:China Transit Visa

Indian Passport holder travelling from US to India with 21 hours layover in Shanghai.

Do I need a visa if I intend to leave the airport and stay in a hotel in Shanghai?

Desi, you don't need a visa for 21-hour layover in China, but if you want to leave the airport, you need to get a temporary stay permit upon arrival. The immigration officer will determine whether to give you that. As your layover is long, it's very possible to get it if you have a hotel reservation at hand.
