Multicities one way tickets visa free to Beijing?

I’m a US citizen. Will fly from Vietnam on a one-way ticket via Cathay Pacific with a 2hrs transit in Hong Kong to Beijing for 36hrs then another one-way ticket to Los Angeles via American Airlines. Trips look like this: LAX > SGN > PEK (transit via HKG) > LAX. All one way tickets booked with different airlines. Am I eligible for the 144 hrs visa free in Beijing?

Yes separate tickets are ok. Yes that is valid entry and exit country are what immigration looks at. Its considered Hong Kong > Beijing > USA which are considered transit to third country.
