About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong - Shanghai (layover in Wuhan airport) then JFK

HI I am a US Citizen without a Chinese visa.

I'm flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai, arriving in HK @ 4:15pm Friday.

Then I'm leaving Shanghai Sunday @ 11AM for JFK (NYC) however there is a 7 hour layover at WUH airport.

- Fri leave HK, ARR 4:15PM Shanghai
- Sun 11AM leave Shanghai
- Sun 1:15PM ARR WUH
- Sun 8:30PM DEP WUH
- Sun 10PM ARR JFK

Will the layover in Shanghai spoil this itinerary? Is there a solution?

You cannot travel in your itinerary's current form. The solutions are to change your flights or get a 10-year tourist visa for $140.

Since you travel through more than one Chinese transit zone Shanghai and then Wuhan, you need a visa as total time in China is over 24 hours. You must leave Shanghai on a non-stop flight to the third country to get more than 24 hours.
