About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel to Wuhan via Shanghai

There are no direct flights from the US to Wuhan, so I transit through Shanghai. Can I fly US>Shanghai get 240 hr transit pass, take flight to Wuhan and stay for 7 days and then leave back the same way to US or do I need to go to someplace like Hong Kong?

To be eligible for the 240, you cannot fly back to US from China as US - China - US is a round trip, not a transit. So you need to go to another country or region like you said, HK, to make it a transit.
