About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Combining 144-hour visa free transit + luggage being checked through to final destination

In terms of being eligible for the 144-hour visa free transit, is it a necessity to pick up your luggage during your China layover or can you also have your luggage checked through to your final destination?

A video seems to suggest that it is an absolute necessity to pick up your luggage in order to get the 144 hour permit

But is this correct?

Or are there people who have experience with getting the 144-hour visa free transit AND at the same time checking their luggage through to the final destination?

You must be staying longer than 24 hours in China to be eligible for 144-hour visa free transit. It would be unwise not to collect your luggage for that length of connection if you actually want to see it at your destination.

OK, thanks. Seems logical.

But to be somewhat more precise:

We'll have a layover in Guangzhou of 18 hours (arriving early morning and flying onward to third country at late evening) and we want to leave the airport to catch some sleep at a hotel nearby.

As I understand now we'll need a 24 hour visa free permit (I initially thought you only had the 144-hour option in Guangzhou).

But then the same question remains for the 24-hour visa free permit...

(Is it a necessity to pick up luggage (as the video suggests) or is it fine to simply check it through in order to get the 24-hour visa free permit?)

You should check with your airline about this. Normally ground agents at the airport are more familiar with this situation than those over the phone.
