About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Update

It is not allowed to enter China visa free for 24hrs if your flight is leaving the same day. I am in Shanghai airport for nearly 20hrs as my connection flight is leaving late and we arrived early this morning. We wanted to use the connection time to spent the day in the city but immigration refused to enter and we were sent to transit only which is horrible here.

Fred, you were not denied 24 hour visa free transit! As I can see you have arrived by your flight to Beijing and you will also continue your journey according to your ticket, but you were denied a temporary entry permit. In reality, 24 hour visa free transit requires that passengers remain within the transit zone of the airport and the issuing of a temporary entry permit is always a sovereign decision by immigration authorities on a day of your arrival.

I can assume that you didn't have your accommodation booked in advance and this is probably the reason why were you denied a permit. Indeed, nobody likes to spend too much hours within the transit zone, but you will manage to do it somehow. In the future, all those who have such a long layovers are supposed to book an accommodation in advance, although even then a temporary entry is not guaranteed.
