About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

going to Shanghai from Hong Kong with US passport

If I'm studying abroad in Hong Kong and want to stay in Shanghai for less than 72hrs, should I leave from another place, like Macau for example, and have my final destination be HK, to not need a visa to visit Shanghai?

That is correct. Also the 144-hour transit has replaced the 72-hour transit.
