About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Going from Hong Kong to China

I'm traveling from the US heading to Hong Kong for 5 days. Going into China for 2-3 days and then back to Hong Kong. Do I need a visa or does the 240 hour free rule apply?

Actually, your planned itinerary:

Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong

Is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit because the basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit clearly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. As you can see you have both of your immediate points in a single eligible entity - Hong Kong.

If you want to be a bit creative, you can make eligible itinerary by inserting Macau into your itinerary:

Hong Kong - Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong

Like this you will take a ferry or a bus from Hong Kong to Macau. From Macau you can take a plane to many mainland Chinese cities, a ferry to Shekou (Shenzhen city) or cross into mainland China (Zhuhai city) on foot at Hengqin border crossing. If you do this you should just keep in mind that even before you enter mainland China from Macau you will have to buy your exit ticket from mainland China to Hong Kong. Again, it can be done by a plane, ferry or high speed train, but the ticket has to be bought in advance because you will be asked to present it at the moment of your exit from Macau and also upon your arrival in mainland China.

If you create your itinerary in this way, you will be able to enjoy 240 hour visa free transit in mainland China. I hope this helps.
