About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit visa in Shanghai

I am exploring various options for flying from Seoul to LAX. The cheapest option appears to be flying from Seoul to Shanghai, via Asiana Air. The second leg (Shanghai to LAX) would be with United. Would a 72 hour transit visa be granted? I’m not sure if backtracking from Seoul to Shanghai or flying with two different air carriers would create problems.

If your itinerary is exactly like this:

Seoul - Shanghai - Los Angeles

And you don't have any additional stops of any kind, you are definitely eligible for 24 or 144 hours visa free transit in relation to the length of your stay in Shanghai and you definitely don't need any kind of visa. It is perfectly allowed to have to separate tickets and this detail was always normally accepted. In other words, you have definitely eligible itinerary.

By the way, you should use correct terminology because this is not 24 or 144 hour transit visa, but 24 or 144 visa free transit, so there is no visa at all. Also, 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.
