London - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Hello there!
A family member is coming to Shanghai next month for our wedding celebration. He's a UK passport holder.
If he flies direct from London to Shanghai (arriving on December 5th) and then flies from Shanghai to Hong Kong on December 10th, would he be able to use the 144 hour visa-free transfer?
We would book his ticket from Hong Kong to London separately.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks so much! Does it make a difference if we don't book the tickets separately and have all three flights as part of one trip? His stop in Hong Kong would just be a few hours. He's very worried about being denied entry at the airport.

Yes, his itinerary:

London - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Also, separate tickets are perfectly fine for this visa free transit scheme.
