You are allowed to rely on 144 hour visa free transit, but to be allowed to use this travel without visa scheme, you have to create an itinerary that will be eligible. In short, the points before and after Qingdao have to be in different countries. To be more precise, you can use an itinerary of this kind (just a few samples):

US - Qingdao - Seoul - US
US - Qingdao - Osaka - US
US - Qingdao - Hong Kong - US

As you can see, there are several options and you can also reverse the order of the countries that I have mentioned. Just be focused that you need different countries as immediate points before and after Qingdao and you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.
