You are perfectly allowed to do that and everything is based on an eligible itinerary that will allow you to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area that encompasses the area of Shanghai City itself and the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Like this, you will be able to see quite a lot of this, probably the most frequented part of China.

To create an eligible itinerary, you have to insert a third country beside US and China itself. The rule for a visa free transit tells that the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination have to be in different countries or eligible territories. In other words, your itinerary could be something like this (just the samples):

US - Shanghai - Tokyo - US
US - Shanghai - Seoul - US
US - Shanghai - Hong Kong - US

As you can see, you can also travel first to the countries/territories that I have placed behind Shanghai if the time and the price are more suitable for your budget and your travel plans.

Part two:

You are perfectly allowed to have all the flights on one ticket, to have two or three separate flights and similar. This is all eligible. Anyway, you should have one, probably the most important detail in mind... You are not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China of any kind! So, you cannot do something like this:

US - Shanghai - Beijing - Tokyo - US

Two consecutive Chinese stops immediately disqualifies you for 144 hour visa free transit scheme.

One more detail... 144 hour visa free transit is in reality: the day of arrival + 6 days. In other words, if you are arriving in Shanghai on Monday, your flight out of Shanghai has to be until Sunday 23:59 (23:59pm). Only the scheduled time is taken into consideration.

Ok... So the way I book my flight are round trips on Expedia. So I would have to book US to Shanghai and back. I can also while I’m there book a flight from Shanghai to somewhere else then back.

So the question is can I book
